compound-writing

A Claude Code and Codex plugin that gives writers a full toolbox of named skills, from brainstorm to final pass, while preserving their voice.

What’s new here

Compound Writing applies the installable-skill plugin pattern to prose. It separates two things that often get conflated: how your sentences should sound (VOICE.md) and what your writing must argue and prove (STYLE.md). A single front-door skill, cw-scribe, reads your situation and picks the smallest useful path through a catalog of more than 25 named skills, so you never have to learn the full catalog before you can start.

What it does

Compound Writing installs as a plugin for Claude Code or Codex. Once loaded, every skill is available under the cw- prefix.

On first use, cw-scribe sets up a portable writing home: a folder with VOICE.md, STYLE.md, an optional AUDIENCE.md, an examples/ directory, and a drafts/ folder per piece. It does not overwrite anything that already exists.

The skill catalog covers the full writing arc:

  • Develop the idea: cw-brainstorm, cw-interview, cw-thesis, cw-outline
  • Draft and revise: cw-draft, cw-dev-edit, cw-line-edit, cw-bluf
  • Clean up AI residue: cw-ai-check, cw-voice-check, cw-tracks
  • Pressure-test: cw-objections, cw-nemesis, cw-panel, cw-debate
  • Lens reviews: cw-hemingway, cw-hitchcock, cw-vonnegut, cw-sorkin, and others
  • Publish readiness: cw-final-pass

Context loads in a defined priority order: user instructions first, then workspace files, then the writing home, then plugin defaults. cw-save writes confirmed learnings back to the right file rather than accumulating them in hidden state.

Who it’s for

Writers who already use Claude Code or Codex and want structured help at every stage, not just sentence-level suggestions. Also useful for editors who want repeatable review workflows, or teams with a shared house style who can store it in a versioned STYLE.md.

Try it

Requires a Claude Code session with plugin marketplace access.

/plugin marketplace add EveryInc/compound-writing
/plugin install compound-writing@compound-writing

Start a new session after installing. Run /cw-help to see the catalog, or just run /cw-scribe and describe what you want to write.

For Codex, clone the repo locally and point your Codex marketplace config at the folder. The repo includes codex-marketplace.example.json showing the expected entry format.

To update: /plugin update compound-writing@compound-writing

How mature is it

337 stars, 35 forks, 1 contributor, 0 releases. Created June 2026, last pushed September 2026. 2 commits in the last 90 days. No license declared in the GitHub API, though the README states MIT. One open issue, one open PR. Early-stage: the architecture and skill catalog are well-documented, but the single contributor and absence of a formal release suggest it is still a personal or small-team project.
